“Go and Take on the World” – Pat Cummins Reveals His Late Mother’s Powerful Last Words

Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins recently shared the inspirational words his late mother imparted to him before her passing last year. The right-arm fast bowler revealed that his mother encouraged him to conquer the world and seize opportunities before others could.

Cummins left India during the Test tour in early 2023 to be with his mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer and entered palliative care. She passed away during the 4th Test between India and Australia in Ahmedabad, and Cummins did not return for the subsequent limited-overs matches.

Speaking about his mother in the ‘Test’ documentary, Cummins recalled: “My mother told me, ‘Pat, go and take on the world. Someone’s going to do these wonderful things; it might as well be you.’”

In the months following her passing, the New South Wales speedster achieved unprecedented success as Australia’s captain. Under his leadership, the national team won the World Test Championship, retained the Ashes in England, and secured the 50-over World Cup.

“The Hardest Time of My Life” – Pat Cummins

Reflecting on the challenging period, Cummins expressed regret about leaving Australia for international duties when he could have spent more time with his mother. He shared: “I knew when I was getting on that plane that I would have to come back in a couple of weeks. Flying away… That’s the hardest time of my life, easily. I probably felt it in the 12 months leading in. Any time I flew away, I was like, ‘Time’s finite here, I’m making a deliberate choice to go and play somewhere rather than spend it at home.’”

Now, the 31-year-old is on the brink of another significant achievement as his team, SunRisers Hyderabad, prepares to face the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL final on Sunday in Chennai.
